Once I Was A Bachelor (Shopluk)

from Eugenia Georgieva: Bulgarian Song Storytelling by Eugenia Georgieva

/

about

A humorous story from the Shopluk region about a young man who married a very lazy woman. He would cook and look after the household, work and plough the fields, and all she did was eat and drink what he had prepared. So the man sought advice from the old people in the village, and the advice was such – to go to a forest, cut a log, make sure it’s comfortable to hold in his hand, and give her a good beating. He did it, and the next day she came early to the fields where he was ploughing with hot lunch. He invited her to sit with him but she rushed back home saying that she has a lot of wool spinning to do. The final refrain and moral of the story is that “the stick can cure anything”.
