about

This recording was made on 15th April 2023, the day fresh fighting erupted in Sudan. Every penny from sales will go to people affected by the violence and the long-term disruption it causes to their lives.

Bashir Al Gamar was born in Sudan, he came to England in 1993, after being imprisoned for his poem 'Patience on a Beach' Since then he has lived in Brighton.

He is a poet, songwriter and composer, since 1991 he has written and composed more than 40 poems and songs, mainly in Arabic. Most of them are well known in his home country.

The music here is a recording of a concert Bashir played, in Brighton, on April 15th 2023. The concert was a joint book launch and film screening with Refugee Radio and Conversations over Borders.
I was doing tech support for Bashirs' performance, so called him in the morning, just to check-in. It was a normal, friendly pre-gig chat and social call, we were both looking forward to the evening. A couple of minutes after the call, he rang back, with a very different tone of voice. Full-scale fighting had broken out in Sudan, with gunfire and bombings. Family members had had their houses shot at and were having to take shelter under their beds.

All the money Bashir makes from his music, he uses for humanitarian aid in Sudan. He supports children's education, clean water supplies, day-to-day basic needs, food and clothing.

Even before the current violence in Sudan, life was difficult for many.
Please pay what you can, it is all appreciated.

Thanks to Bashir for the great music as always and Refugee Radio and Conversations Over Borders for inviting us to their event
