about

Recorded live in St John The Baptist Church, Crawley. June 7 2019. The concert was organised by local resident Valerijus Vilcinskas and an organisation called Russian Heritage in the UK as part of a week celebrating the contributions of people from Russia to life in the UK.
The Choir are making a short tour of the UK from Belarus. The Father is a Church priest, whose Grandfather had lived in the UK. There are plans for them to return to the UK for further concerts in 2019.
russianheritage.org.uk.

The concert was divided into two parts. The first part being Orthodox songs, the second Folk songs. In Russia, a small number of people believe that it is not appropriate to sing folk songs in churches. As a priest, the Father believes it is ok to sing folk songs in church because church chants are about the soul of the human, but folk songs represent the personality of a people.

Before each piece, the Father spoke in Russian explaining the context of the music, and translations were made by Dr Julia Pliauksta. Notes are taken from this dialogue.

Part One: Orthodox Songs

Song 1

Prayer: Our Father, this prayer is about that God loves everybody, and is for everyone.

Song 2

This piece of music is always sung second and is dedicated to St Nicholas the Miracle Worker. Nicholas is a protector of travellers. The choir had driven 2000 km, it was important to praise the saint.

Song 3

A song that is sung during Lent, a dialogue between a person and their soul, discussing the meaning of life

Song 4

The composer of this song collected pieces of music in a box and saved them during WW2, after the war, he found the box, but the music had been destroyed. He used his memory to restore the music.

Song 5

Dedicated to the Mother of God, in this piece, the mother of all people. Composed by a Nun who lives in Minsk. Her choir had performed in the UK a week previous to tonight's concert. Before becoming a Nun, she had been a professional musician and astrologist. Her son became ill, and as much as she tried to find a treatment the sons' illness continued. He only became healthy after she burned all her Tarot cards. After her sons' recovery, she became a Nun.

Song 6

Dedicated to the Mother of God. The composer left Russia after the October revolution, in this piece, you can feel his great nostalgia.

Song 7

4th Century prayer.

Song 8

Dedicated to the Mother of God. In Russian Orthodox tradition, she is very important, seen as a mother for everybody. The name of the prayer is ‘Under your Grace’

Song 9

Easter classical song. During Easter, we remember not just one cross, but three crosses. The song combines two themes for Easter. Firstly happy that Jesus has risen and the hope for eternal life. But we also we remember Easter is also about the suffering. In older times there were two Easters. Black Easter about suffering and Red Easter about joy. This chant combines the two themes.

Song 10

Dedicated to the Mother of God. The chant is called ‘Dear Mother of God, we come under your protection and ask for survival’

Song 11

Dedicated to the Mother of God
